Abdelal (business administration, Harvard Business School), Blyth (political science, Brown U.), and Parsons (political science, U. of Oregon) believe that the materialist and rationalist basis of most scholarship on international political economy is untenable and that international political economy as a field would do well to engage in a far more sustained manner with social constructivism, which incorporates analysis of how collectively held ideas shape the social, economic, and political world. They present this collection of ten essays as a means of encouraging such an engagement. The essays provide examples of constructivist approaches toward understanding the roles of meaning, cognition, uncertainty, and subjectivity in the construction of the international world order. Specific topics include meaning and the construction of the World Bank's good governance agenda; institutionalized hypocrisy and the politics of agricultural trade; cognitive frames and scripts and the making of regional trade areas; business lobbying in multilateral service liberalization in the face of uncertainty; and uncertainty, social forces, and monetary cooperation.
