Grandpa Elephant knows that it is his time to goto the elephant graveyard, and so he begins hisfarewell to his grandchildren. The young elephantsare confused, but they soon realize that althoughthere is sadness, the mystery of death holds countlesspossibilities. Maybe Grandpa Elephant will goto heaven and walk on clouds, or maybe he willcome back to earth in a new form. Even he doesnot know. Though the little elephants will never seeGrandpa Elephant again, they learn that he will liveon in their thoughts and dreams. 

Helping children deal with the loss of a loved onecan be difficult, but Farewell, Grandpa Elephant canmake it easier to explain what is happening in termsthat they will understand. Through the elephants'eyes, children learn that even though they willnever see a beloved face again, there is the certaintyof preservation through their memory.
