This book is the American Mathematical Society printing of this title, which was first published in 1967 by W. A. Benjamin and whose second edition was published by Benjamin Cummings in 1978. The book was also distributed by Perseus Press for the last decade. It is the updated 1985 (fifth) printing that is reproduced here. It includes most of the basic results in manifold theory, as well as some key facts from point set topology and Lie group theory. Introductory chapters offer background in differential theory and calculus on manifolds. Later chapters are organized in sections on analytical dynamics, qualitative dynamics, and celestial mechanics. Chapter exercises are included. The book can be used as a textbook and as a basic reference for the foundations of differentiable and Hamiltonian dynamics. Readership includes mathematicians, physicists, and engineers interested in geometrical methods in mechanics, assuming a background in calculus, linear algebra, some classical analysis, and point set topology.
