Adams (church history, Cordon-Cornwell Theological Seminary) describes vision types in late medieval English lay piety and how didactic visions affected the experiences of laypeople and their perspectives on rules for dealing with the spiritual world. He focuses on visions not mentioned in the Scriptures, but rather in saints' stories, sermon illustrations, and religious manuals. He notes five important dynamics of spirituality and the role visions played in enhancing them: the transactional nature of the economy of atonement and satisfaction, reciprocated devotion of the cult of the saints, spiritual warfare, the visual nature of the liturgy, and the power and seeds of self-destruction in the vision as mediated revelation.
