This study discusses how modern poets were influenced by contemporary science and technology. After an overview of science and poetry from classical times to the 20th century, the monograph focuses major theories of art and theories of poetry that emerged in the early decades of the 20th century (such as Naturalism, Symbolism, Futurism, and Imagism), looking at their assumptions against the background of modern science and technology. Later chapters seek patterns in the work of modern British and American poets in relation to scientific and technological developments of their times, analyzing how their poetic visions were affected by the scientific perspective and how poets assimilated the discoveries of science into their writing. Poets discussed include Alfred Noyes, Robert Bridges, T. S. Eliot, A. E. Robinson, and Hart Crane. Recommended for research libraries. Annotation ©2015 Ringgold, Inc., Portland, OR (protoview.com)
