Albrecht (theory and media history, New Jersey City U.) begins a dialogue on the role media have played and continue to play in restructuring the experience and understanding of music. His focus is not on music itself, but on its communication: the various channels that mediate music and the kinds of social environments that result. A tentative thesis is that as technology restructures how music is mediated and collectively experienced, it also transforms how people think, perceive, and interact with the world. After setting it out, he applies it in an ethnography and oral history of musical change in a small Brazilian town. Annotation ©2004 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
