This annotated film guide will help medical educators use film and other visual media to teach their students about everything from specific diseases to ethical issues in medicine. The editors are behavioral scientists working in medical education, and the book's international contributors come from various medical and health areas. Entries on specific films describe plot and themes and supply many discussion questions, with questions keyed to DVD chapters and time sequences. The first section offers a review of the literature on film in medical education. The rest of the book is divided into sections on family functioning and health, specific disease states, mental health issues, positive and negative movie portrayals of health care professionals, medical specialties, and compassion and medicine. The last section looks at alternative formats such as reality TV, documentary films, YouTube, and music videos. Each chapter closes with scholarly medical references, a list of further reading in books and scholarly journals, and a list of web sites. This second edition features new chapters on areas such as disaster medicine, military medicine, and personality tests. Alexander teaches family medicine at the University of North Carolina. The book is published by Radcliffe Publishing, UK, and distributed in the US by BookMasters. Annotation ©2012 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
