Pharmacists are expected to posses the knowledge and skills necessary to compound extemporaneous preparations of pharmaceutical medications, and the number of compounded prescriptions has increased in recent decades reflecting the move toward individualized drug therapy. For the third edition of his text, Allen (emeritus, College of Pharmacy, U. of Oklahoma) incorporates new standards from the United States Pharmacopeial Convention and also adds chapters on compounding issues relevant to terrorist attacks and natural disasters, hazardous drugs, and cosmetics for special populations. Opening chapters cover guidelines; facilities, equipment, and supplies; record keeping; stability of compounded preparations; calculations; quality control; flavors, sweeteners, and colors; and preservation, sterilization, and depyrogenation. Fourteen chapters then cover the various types of preparations, followed by the new chapters mentioned above as well as discussions of biotechnology, nanotechnology, and pharmacogenomics; veterinary pharmaceuticals; and compounding for clinical studies. American Pharmacists Association Books are distributed by McGraw-Hill. Annotation ©2008 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
