W.E.B. Du Bois is best known as the moving force behind the foundation of the NAACP and for his sociological writings. However, he also had a great deal of input into theories of education for African-Americans. Alridge (Education, Franklin College of Arts and Sciences, university of Georgia) follows the development of Du Bois' educational models from the end of the nineteenth century to the middle of the twentieth. He shows how Du Bois changed this model as conditions in society changed. Alridge also shows how Du Bois' own education influenced his attitude, especially his conviction that Black Colleges were the best place for Black students to blossom. This is an excellent introduction to Du Bois and his milieu, written in an accessible style that could even be used in high school classes and would be interesting to the general reader.
