Panama native Amado (sociology, Latin American studies, Guilford College) examines recent Mexican immigrants' use of kinship and friendship ties as work links in metropolitan Atlanta, a city that has seen an increased number of Mexican workers in the past decade. She finds that undocumented status, lack of English proficiency, and limited knowledge of the local labor market limit the mobility of recent immigrants beyond their close-knit networks of family and friends, and their chances of learning about jobs through weak ties. The study also finds women immigrants often have less opportunity than men to develop work-related networks beyond the family/friend sphere and male immigrants lack the commitment in guiding their female relatives during job searching, leaving female immigrants at both an ethnic- and gender-based disadvantage.
