Initial chapters offer overviews of the profession, including philosophy, history, education and regulation, and international practice. Following are chapters on the basic sciences, including the five models of osteopathic treatment, concepts of anatomy, the fascial systems, somatic dysfunction, and physiological rhythms, among other topics. A large section of chapters on the patient encounter address topics that include mind-body medicine, spirituality and health care, end of life care, and evidence-based medicine. Following is coverage of body regions and manipulative treatment (both traditional and contemporary approaches), patient management, and approaches to research.
