Glenn J. Ames (history, H. of Toledo, US) has specialized on voyages during the Age of Discoveries, and here translates and annotates the record of the Portuguese sailor's epic journey that opened the door for European exploration and exploitation of Asia during the same decade that Columbus was performing a like service for the Americas. The manuscript was discovered in 1834 without title page or other autograph, and the controversy has raged ever since over its authorship.
