Through her analysis of Indian male reactions to female movements of assertion, Anagol (Cardiff U.) shows that such movements were based on a consciousness of gender inequalities and reveals the determination of an emerging female intelligentsia to remedy those injustices. She reviews periodicals written for and edited by women, song and cookbooks, book reviews and court records to trace the ways in which Indian women engaged in power from the late 19th to the early 20th century. Anagol's investigation of the growth of the women's press and its participation in the wider vernacular press highlights the relationship between symbolic or hidden resistance and open assertion by women.
