Neural systems models are computer programs that provide insight into brain function. This hands-on tutorial is written in an accessible style, and can be used as a textbook for a one-semester course in computational neuroscience, as well as for independent study by graduate students. The book is intended especially for beginning students in neuroscience, cognitive science, and related areas who have limited background in mathematics and computer programming. Prior knowledge of neuroscience is not required. After an introduction to computer programming, the book's 12 chapters each present a different modeling paradigm. Readers are guided through short, simple computer programs written in MATLAB (program files are available on a companion web site). Actual data on real neural systems are presented for comparison with the results of the MATLAB simulations. The reader-friendly layout features b&w illustrations and wide margins with space for readers' written notes. Math boxes present mathematical material that is relevant but not essential for running the MATLAB programs. MATLAB boxes and exercises are also included. With the inclusion of a painting called The Birth of Madness on the cover, which the author interprets as depicting neural systems modeling, the author hopes to transmit some of his excitement about the subject to his readers. Anastasio teaches at the University of Illinois. Annotation ©2010 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
