For this encyclopedia, Anderson (New York U.) and Herr (Montclair State U.) have chosen a broad definition of activism as occurring both within conventional political arenas and outside them, but have limited their choices of entries on those forms of global activism that included social justice as an espoused goal, whether or not that goal has been achieved. Thus, both Zionism and the anti-Zionist leader of Hezbollah, Hassan Nasrallah, earn entries, as do the anti-immigration Minutemen and the Chicano rights la Raza Unida Party. The majority of entries do tend to be representative of the political left, because it is the left that has most consistently included social justice in its myriad platforms. The three-volume set contains approximately 1000 entries providing information related to (as per the readers guide) broad themes in activism in social justice; the arts; criticism/critical theory; cultural studies and popular culture; consumer movements; education; environmentalism; globalization/anti-globalization; labor, socialism, communism, and social class, legal and judicial system, human rights, and civil rights; media and communications; political and social movements from around the world; political philosophy and ethics; religious and spiritual movements; and social, health, and welfare rights. Global coverage is broad and gender-balanced and extends back into the 19th century. Annotation ©2007 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
