Anfinset (archaeology, U. of Bergen) synthesizes the cultural changes that occurred in the the southern Levant and northeast Africa from about 5,000 to about 3,000 BC related to widespread changes in animal husbandry and agriculture, and expanding exchange and interaction over vast areas. First she looks in turn at the two regions from the late neolithic to the Early Bronze Age I in the southern Levant and to the Predynastic period of Egypt and Lower Nubia. Then she turns to the role of nomadic pastoralists, discussing present nomads, archeology, and the fifth and fourth millennia BC. The mining, smelting, and casting of copper are considered next, along with its artefacts and metallurgical aspects. A final chapter examines contact and exchange, specialization and ritualization, and the social value of early copper. Distributed in North America by The David Brown Book Co.
