Together, surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS)--narrowly defined as surface plasmon-assisted enhancement of Raman scattering--and surface- enhanced infrared absorption (SEIRA) form a new branch of vibrational spectroscopy called surface- enhanced vibrational spectroscopy (SEVS). Aroca (chemistry and biochemistry, U. of Windsor, Canada) begins his monograph on SEVS by reviewing the vibrating molecule and the origin of infrared and Raman spectra and providing a brief discussion on the absorption and scattering of light by metallic nanoparticles, the fabrication of nanostructures, and the selection of the appropriate experimental conditions for SERS and SEIRA. Remaining chapters consider SERS as a surface plasmon-assisted spectroscopy, the chemical effects of molecule-nanostructure interactions, the ability to apply SERS to different types of molecule systems, and overviews of SERS and SEIRA applications.
