Arrigo (criminal justice, U. of North Carolina at Charlotte) and Williams (criminology, U. of West Georgia) observe that the subject of crime per se has generally not been subjected to the sorts of general ontological, epistemological, ethical, and aesthetical analyses that could aid in its understanding and suggest alternative applications in law and justice studies nor has philosophy generally been considered a suitable topic in criminology departments. In this work, they provide a preliminary sketch of what a philosophical criminology might yield. They present eight paired chapters, with each section addressing some of the criminological insights that can come from application of each of the four major subdivisions of philosophy referred to above.
