Excavations during the summer of 2002 turned up evidence for occupation of the site from the early first century, when the Romans were just settling in, to the ninth century, by which time the Saxons were well established. The Roman farmstead began as a ditched field system and livestock enclosure, but was altered throughout the Roman period. Pottery and metalwork suggest a continuity of settlement between Roman and Anglo-Saxon periods. The Saxons first appeared with seven sunken-featured building in the fifth or early sixth centuries. The farm seems to have been part of a larger village or settlement, perhaps with a market. It was abandoned probably due to the defeat of King Edmund at Thetford in 869 and the subsequent arrival of Danish settlers. The report is not indexed.
