In the wake of the Lewis and Clark expedition, US president James Monroe in 1824 directed Brigadier General Henry Atkinson and Indian Agent Benjamin O'Fallon to negotiate peace treaties with tribes along the Missouri River. To impress the natives and make a military show against Canadian and British fur trading interests, they took some 475 soldiers in man-powered side-wheel boats. Atkinson's journal was first published in 1929; Maj. Stephen Watts Kearny's journal (which is also included in this book) had never been published before now. Jensen (a research anthropologist) and Hutchins (retired from the Smithsonian Institute) have included an introduction and supporting material. The book is co-published by the Montana Historical Society Press and the Nebraska State Historical Society. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
