This is the third volume of a series that publishes the proceedings of the Arthur M. Sackler Colloquium on the evolutionary sciences, which is sponsored by the National Academy of Sciences. This volume contains 17 papers from the January, 2009, meeting, held the same year as the 200th anniversary of Charles Darwin's birth and the 150th anniversary of the publication of On the Origin of Species. The papers explore modern research approaches and current scientific theories concerning natural selection, the subject of the above-mentioned work, as well as artificial and sexual selection, which Darwin addressed in, respectively, The Variation of Animals and Plants Under Domestication (1868) and The Descent of Man and Selection in Relation to Sex (1871). Also included is a group of papers in which science historians reflect on Darwin's contributions to science. Annotation ©2010 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
