The papers in this collection were presented at the 2007 Anglo Dutch Wellcome Symposium--Medicine and Space: Bodies, Buildings, and Other Borders, or were commissioned to augment the selections. Each has been subjected to blind review and offers insight on the relationship between space and medicine during Antiquity and the Middle Ages. The 12 papers are grouped in sections on spaces of anatomy, the body of space, surroundings, and hospitals and architecture, and a sampling of topics includes fistulas, the knee and the 'three-dimensional' body; medieval Islamic hospitals; liminaltiy and disability; and the organs of generation in seventeenth-century English medicine. A large section of high quality gloss plates, some in color, complement the text. The contributors are academics in the fields of ancient medicine, classical studies, and medieval history from European and US universities.
