Bakker (intercultural theology, Utrecht U., The Netherlands) has compiled a full and fascinating guide to films made about Jesus, Rama, Buddha, and Mohammad, with commentary for each film that details the representation of the holy figures portrayed and the film's reception. As films about Mohammad are forbidden by Islamic law, only one film is discussed, The Message, produced in 1976. Bakker recounts the complex story of its creation, the context under which it was made, and analyzes the story. He follows the same format for the other films, with separate sections on silent films, later films, visual representations of the holy figure, ideological background to the films, and specific issues concerning film for Hindus, Buddhists, Muslims, and Christians. A separate chapter discusses films about Jesus made in India. A filmography is included. Annotation ©2009 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
