Banakar (socio-legal studies, U. of Westminster, UK) presents a multidisciplinary collection investigating and critiquing public discourse about civil rights and civil liberties and the impact of rights discourses on law and politics. The 18 chapters are presented according to the thematic topics of critique, challenge, strategy, and reconstruction. "Critique" refers to interrogating the concept and deployment of rights in legal and political discourse, as well as in social theory. "Challenge" analyzes cases concerning how rights discourses are deployed in order to change political and legal states of affairs. "Strategy" also addresses the deployment of rights discourses, but this time as strategy in specifically legal contexts, in particular in relation to the "war on terror." The final set of papers explores examples of the ways rights are constructed and reconstructed within public discourses about law and politics.
