The majority of the articles presented here were first delivered at a 2006 workshop on Byzantine commentaries on Aristotle's Nicomachean Ethics held at Notre Dame University. They focus on three twelfth century commentators, Eustratios of Nicaea, Michael of Ephesus and an anonymous author. In their preface, Barber (art history, Notre Dame) and Jenkins, who is the Byzantine Studies Librarian at Notre Dame, note that these were the first commentaries on the work in nearly a thousand years, made under the sponsorship of Anna Kommene, who also wrote a commentary on her own times. They also state that few modern historians have mentioned these authors or the translations made into Latin by thirteenth century Western scholars, so this study is long overdue. The essays begin by setting the scene of Byzantine culture and politics and why the Nicomachean Ethics were of such interest then. Three essays discuss Eustratios' life and his interpretation of Aristotle. The anonymous commentary is studied in terms of language and style. The final essays look at Michael of Ephesus, his philosophy as demonstrated in the commentary and what it says about philosophical thought in Byzantium. This book provides an excellent corrective to West centered historians and those who believe all knowledge of Aristotle was transmitted to Europe through Arabic.
