This text/reader on community-based alternatives to imprisonment offers an alternative to the traditional textbook format for undergraduates; it can serve as a supplement or as a stand-alone text. In each of the book's 11 sections, review of theory is followed by two or three recent and classic research-based articles, edited to be accessible to students, which have previously appeared in leading criminal justice academic journals. Article introductions provide context for understanding the selected readings. An opening section surveys the history and development of community-based corrections. Later sections cover restorative justice, treatment perspectives, and risk prediction, as well as probation management, residential and non-residential sanctions, and special populations such as substance abusers, sex offenders, and the mentally ill. Pedagogical features include b&w photos, applied theory boxes, and discussion and review questions. A student website offers quizzes and additional articles for each section of the book. An instructor's website provides lecture slides. Barton-Bellessa teaches criminology and criminal justice at Indiana State University. Hanser is head of the Department of Criminal Justice at the University of Louisiana. Annotation ©2011 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
