Bassiouni (law, DePaul U.) presents the first volume of a three-volume collection examining the scope, procedures, and enforcement mechanisms of international criminal law. The first volume begins by addressing the sources of international criminal law, who is subject to international criminal law, principles of legality, and doctrinal foundations. It then describes the crimes that are defined by international criminal law and evaluates the legal regimes concerning them normatively. These chapters discuss aggression and the crime against peace; war crimes, crimes against humanity, and genocide; crimes against fundamental rights, including slavery, apartheid, and torture; crimes of terror-violence, including piracy, hostage-taking, financing terrorism, and crimes against international maritime navigation and civil aviation; and crimes against the social interest, including drug trafficking, transnational organized crime, corruption, crimes against cultural property, and crimes against the environment. The second volume will address multilateral and bilateral enforcement mechanisms and the third volume will examine international enforcement. Martinus Nijhoff is an imprint of Brill.
