Baud (Latin American Studies, U. of Amsterdam, the Netherlands) and Ypeij (cultural anthropology, Centre for Latin American Research and Documentation, the Netherlands) bring together 12 chapters that investigate the effects of cultural tourism and the processes of change it triggers in local societies in the Andean Highlands and Central America, as well as when, how, and how successful the integration of tourist activities into local societies has been. Chapters are based on articles given at a conference, "Indigenous Culture, Heritage and Tourism in Latin America: Between Globalization and Local Development," held in June 2007 at the Centre for Latin American Research and Documentation. They provide in-depth explorations of the management of cultural heritage sites; the spatial dimensions of tourism; discourses of identity, nation, and belonging; the development possibilities of cultural tourism; and encounters between local populations and tourists. Contributors work in the fields of global affairs, anthropology, environmental studies, and urban studies, in the US, Mexico, and the Netherlands.
