Bauer, who teaches at William and Mary University, has written an introduction to seven hundred years of the history of the world. For some reason, the time between 312 and 1096 is termed "medieval". Bauer covers events in Europe, Asia, the Americas and North Africa in parallel chapters that occasionally collide, as did the civilizations she chronicles. Her main interest is the development of authority. This means that the work is heavily political and prosopographical, presenting the state-building activities of individual religious and military rulers. Her narrative style is lively and her method of showing similarities across cultures is informative. Her section on the crusades, for instance, points out that there were many, in India, China, the Baltic as well as the entire Arab conquest. This is an excellent corrective to other recent "popular" histories. Annotation ©2010 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
