Bay-Williams and McGatha (mathematics education, U. of Louisville, Kentucky), Korbett, and Wray provide math coaches and teacher leaders with about 100 tools to use to coach teachers and increase student learning. They introduce a framework, Leading for Mathematical Proficiency, that is grounded in research and standards and helps coaches focus on key math outcomes. It includes seven shifts in classroom practice based on research and teaching documents from the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, which are also connected to the Standards for Mathematical Practice from the Common Core State Standards. They outline key coaching skills and eight key teaching skills: content knowledge and worthwhile tasks, instructional strategies, questioning and discourse, formative assessment, analyzing student work, differentiating instruction, and supporting English language learners and students with special needs. Each is connected to the framework, standards, shifts in classroom practice, and coaching tools for planning, data gathering, and reflection. The final section discusses planning professional development, facilitating professional learning communities, and developing activities for a range of teachers. There is no index.
