A pastor in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, Beck (theology and classical languages, Texas Lutheran U.) identifies passages in what he calls the Newer Testament that could be read by early Christians as surreptitiously critical of Roman rule and rulers. He finds them in the Jesus of history, the letters of Paul and other Pauline literature, the synoptic gospels, John and the Johannine epistles, Revelation, 1 Peter, Acts, Hebrews, James, Jude, and 2 Peter. He concludes that Jesus and his immediate followers had a strong desire for freedom in this life as well as for salvation in the next. Annotation ©2010 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
