"Orsenna writes on the edge of an abyss, between sadness that paralyzes and life that has to go on."?Elle

Shipwrecked off the coast of Portugal in 1476, the twenty-five-year-old Christopher Columbus seeks refuge in Lisbon with his younger brother Bartholomew, a mapmaker. Together the brothers work to prepare for their expedition to the Indies, yet their passion for discovery leads them not to the paradise that they had envisaged, but to destruction and, ultimately, to genocide.

Érik Orsenna has written seven novels and been awarded the Roger Nimier and Goncourt prizes. He was elected to the French Academy in 1998.
