Distraction osteogenesis is a surgical process used for the reconstruction of bone deformities in which the bone is surgically split in two segments and gradually moved apart slowly so that new bone can form in the gap and, according to Bell (U. of Texas Southwestern, US) and Guerrero (Central U. of Venezuela Dental School, Venezuela), is particularly useful for treatment of maxillofacial deformity patients with congenital, post tumor oblation, post traumatic defects, and temporomandibular joint deformities that defy correction by immediate repositioning of the facial bones. They present 54 chapters describing techniques of distraction osteogenesis for the facial skeleton, covering diagnosis and treatment planning, efficient orthodontic repositioning of the teeth, lengthening and widening of the maxilla, lengthening and widening of the mandible, treatment of sleep apnea and other sleep disorders, temporomandibular joint reconstruction, alveolar reconstruction, and reconstruction of the jaws. The text is copiously illustrated with full color photographs and other illustrations. The CD-ROM contains a PDF file reproducing the text and its illustrations, as well as additional surgical video and case reports. Annotation ©2007 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
