The 22 papers presented here were all drawn from a January 2002 international symposium (organized by two of the editors at Tel Aviv U., Israel) devoted to the investigation of Jewish collectivities and the Jewish diaspora. After introductory pieces on the concept of Klal Yisrael (Commonwealth of Israel or the Jewish people), contemporary Jewish demographics, and transnational diasporas, the papers look at issues of Jewish identity and discourse within Israel.
