Bennion (anthropology, Lyndon State College, Vermont) found that women in polygamous communities in Montana's Bitterroot Mountains were able to drop personal idiosyncrasies and pride and open themselves to absolute sharing and reciprocity. They formed an efficient female economic and spiritual network, she reports, that included a Montessori school program, a wheat-grinding mill, a fruit cannery, and a dairy. Shared childcare also allowed mothers to pursue education or career outside the community. Annotation ©2009 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
