Originally published in English and translated from the French in 1955, this second edition can be viewed as a historical document as well as a treatise on Zen. As Barrett indicates in his foreword, "Benoit's work may be read as an example of an understanding of Zen specific to his time and place..." that time and place being after the devastation of World War II which provoked the psychiatrist/author's subsequent interest in Zen and psychiatry. The anti-scholarly work discusses the metaphysics of Zen: the philosophy, the psychological conditions of Satori, and theological considerations such as "original sin."
