Electrical and computer engineers Bhattacharyya and A. Datta (both Texas A&M U.) and L. H. Keel (Tennessee State U.) present material they have used for a second graduate course in control systems. They strive for a balance between elegant mathematical theory and useful engineering oriented results that can serve students of electrical, mechanical, chemical, aerospace, and civil engineering and of computer science and mathematics. With a judicious choice of reading assignments, they predict, all the material could be covered in a 14-week semester. The three sections cover in turn proportional-integral-derivation (PID) controllers and first-order controllers for continuous and discrete time linear systems possibly containing delays, the robust stability and performance of systems under parametric as well as unstructured uncertainty, and the optimal control of linear systems.
