The Dada artists of Berlin, Germany, during the Weimar era engaged in an intense exploration of the figure of the cyborg. In part, according to Biro (modern and contemporary art, U. of Michigan), this was a fearful response to the destruction of World War I, but paradoxically the cyborg was also a creature on which these artists projected utopian hopes and fantasies. He explores the interrelated meanings of the cyborg in Berlin Dada art, showing the cyborg as a representation of hybrid identity and as the locus of new modes of interior and exterior awareness created by the impact of technology on human perception.
