Blaine (psychology, St. John Fisher College) expands his earlier The Psychology of Diversity: Perceiving and Experiencing Social Difference by increasing the range of social differences covered and by incorporating some 20 one-to-two-page diversity-related social issues "content set-asides" into the text. He first introduces basic concepts including dimensions and definitions of diversity; social categorization, stereotypes, and stereotyping; self-fulfilling prophecy and stereotypic communication; prejudice; and anxiety, self-esteem, and projecting a public image (as well as their relationships to prejudicial reactions others). He then explores stereotypes and prejudices towards different populations and concludes with chapters discussing the role of television in promoting stereotypes and prejudice, social stigma and the consequences of and responses to stigma, and methods for responding to inequality.
