Well-illustrated with b&w plates, this volume offers 18 essays on the iconography of profane subjects carved on misericords (choir stalls) or presented in prints in medieval Europe. The papers were first presented at the Sixth Biennial Colloquium Misericordia International, held in July 2003, the U. of Sheffield in the UK. Written by art historians, English scholars, early music scholars, conservators, and graduate students in the US, Australia, and Europe, the papers delve into the symbolism and sources of the apes, monks, geese, monks, and various strange and comical scenes carved under choir stall seats and appearing in Northern Renaissance prints. A notable addition to the mix is the analysis of medievalism in the 1938 film The adventures of Robin Hood by the late Brian J. Levy (medieval French studies, U. of Hull). Abstracts written in French of all the articles are provided. The volume is distributed in North America by The David Brown Book Co. Annotation ©2009 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
