Boehm (urban studies, Worcester State College) analyzed hundreds of popular works on the US Midwest city, preferring mainstream and national periodicals rather than specialized publications, to survey the ebb and flow of coverage over the years. She focuses on times in which a new infusion of popular documents reinvigorated ongoing images of the city for Americans in a vital way. Such well known stories as the Haymarket riot and the Pullman strike, she slides over quickly. Her conclusion is that the central element of Chicago's role in popular culture does not change much during the century. Annotation ©2004 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
