If archaeology is to take human agency seriously, than it must begin to pay heed to the role of events in social processes, argues Bolender (anthropology, U. of Massachusetts Boston), who suggests that the eventful sociology of William Sewell, wherein material evidence is given an equal footing with ideas in the construction of social structure and the event is understood as an episode that results in a significant reordering of social structure, can serve as a template for moving towards an eventful archaeology. In this volume, he presents 14 chapters that explore how such an approach, as well as other approaches, can inform archaeological research in order to make it eventful. The papers illustrate eventful archaeological analyses of issues from Paleolithic times through to the early American city. Annotation ©2011 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
