Controversial African American leader Booker T. Washington used Tuskegee Institute as his home base for his efforts to improve the plight of African Americans. A major key to his success was his entrepreneurial approach to developing, maintaining, and expanding Tuskegee Institute. In this study, Boston (Brockport State College) examines Washington's entrepreneurial ideas and practices. The author describes the political, economic, and social forces during Reconstruction, and highlights Washington's influence on other African American leaders and entrepreneurs. The author concludes that Washington was neither an economic separatist nor an accommodationist, but rather a strategist who understood the importance of business development for empowerment and equality. Boston is a member of the Association for the Study of Afro-American Life and History in New York State. Annotation ©2010 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
