This work describes the skills and standards of practice used by mediators and provides a wealth for resources for both novice and experienced practitioners. The book will also be useful for disputants and their advisers. Three roles of the mediator are stressed: explaining the life-cycle of conflict, creating the best possible climate for parties in the dispute, and facilitating negotiation. The book avoids dealing with theoretical and policy issues, and instead gives practical advice on the communication process, encouraging settlement, and special issues such as interpreters and multi-party cases. There is also advice on developing a mediation practice. About 430 pages of appendices offer sample documents and forms, guidelines and checklists, ethical standards, and the text of European laws, as well as lists of books and articles, videos and DVDs, European organizations, and providers of online dispute resolution. Boulle directs the Mandela Institute and teaches law at the University of Witwatersrand, South Africa. Nesic is on CORE's International Panel of Mediators.
