The relationship of visual arts and poetry is well known, beginning with Homer's description of Achilles shield, with which Bram begins and ends this study. The poems contained in Tuvia Rüdner's book Pesel u-Masekhah or Effigy and Mask are all reflections on paintings made from the fourteenth century to the twentieth. Each chapter begins with an English translation of the original Hebrew followed by an exegesis based on ekphrasitic traditions. Bram places some importance on Rüdner's internalization of his Holocaust experiences in the poems but that interpretation is problematic in the ones selected. Distributed in North America by ISBS.
