In addition to discussing basic theories and typologies of commonly encountered varieties of corporate crime, such as fraud, forgery, and embezzlement, this text also examines legalistic aspects of white collar crime and provides the investigative tools and analytic techniques needed if students wish to pursue careers in the field. Issues such as misuse of government office, bribery, and corporate corruption are also discussed. The text also emphasizes the connection between white collar crime and acts of international terrorism, in addition to covering more controversial aspects of possible abuses of power within the public arena posed by the USA Patriot Act of 2001 and the asset forfeiture process. Each chapter contains two readings, mostly ethnographic in nature, while the chapter provides a conceptual and theoretical framework for the readings. Chapter summaries, thought questions, and research activities are included, along with b&w historical and contemporary photos and political cartoons. Brightman is associate research professor in the War Gaming Department of the US Naval War College. Annotation ©2009 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
