This four-volume set, edited by Britt (psychology, Clemson U.), Castro (a career psychological operations officer with the US Army currently at the Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center), and Adler (a research psychologist with the US Army Medical Research Unit-Europe), is organized around four defining fields of applied military psychology: military performance, operational stress, the military family, and military culture. Each volume on begins with a first person account relevant to the volume's theme, concludes with a discussion of "future directions," and contains nine other contributions. The first volume on military performance is organized into sections dealing with human dimensions of military operations, physiological and cognitive dimensions of military operations, and social and personality dimensions of military operations. The contributions in the volume on operational stress are presented in sections on psychological preparation for war, psychological demands during and after deployment, and organizational responses to psychological challenges. Discussions of challenges facing the military spouse, family diversity, and work-family conflict among military personnel comprise the next volume. In the concluding volume, military culture is considered in terms of military values, group diversity, and perspectives and attitudes towards the military.
