In literature, painting and especially film, the interiors in which the characters dwell do more that set the stage; they say something about the needs and desires of those characters. Brown (English, Boston University) studies the way in which authors from Daniel Defoe to John Updike have used the bourgeois interior. Sometimes it becomes a satire, more often it is a reflection of the desire for safety and stability, along with a certain pleasure in possessions. The one filmmaker she examines is, appropriately, Ingmar Bergman whose intimate interiors demonstrate visually what the authors describe in words.
