The ten papers presented by Brown (social work, U. of Victoria, Canada) and Strega (social work, U. of Manitoba, Canada) are united by their authors' belief that "social justice [is] as necessary for research processes as well as for research outcomes" and a willingness to explore new approaches to research that may transgress traditional research boundaries. Many of the papers were taken from a series of symposia sponsored by the U. of Victoria's Research Initiatives for Social Change Unit. Topics include the role of Indigenous epistemologies and theories in research, a typology of "anti-oppressive" theories, issues of power and representation in the use of a critical autobiographical narrative methodology by a disabled women researcher, the politics of location in the relationship between researchers and communities, and a critique of the ontological and epistemological foundations of traditional social science.
