The celebration of who we are, where we are, and what we are doing is essential to our psyches. It is also essential for success in a world that is not likely to initiate or join in that celebration. Brown (gender and women's studies and educational policy studies, U. of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign) explains how the celebration of Black girlhood centers on the everyday achievements that are in actuality not so commonplace. She describes an educational approach that interrogates popular culture, personal traits and lived experiences and delineates the content of a new, hip-hop pedagogy formed upon the celebration of Black girls and women. She reminds readers that what Black girls and women need is power, that developing a valid curriculum depends upon the re-evaluation of past narratives and their discrepancies, and that the road to a hip-hop feminist pedagogy has gone from emergent to thriving.
